The More Zoom, Less Space: Compact Mega-zoom

Compact long zoom, also known as travel zoom cameras are some of the most popular point and shoot at CNET. This is probably because they offer a wide-angle zoom along, allowing you great flexibility in shooting, but the volume of the largest DSLR-style long zoom. All the major camera manufacturers have at least one if not two or three in their tails to determine which meets their needs is difficult. To help, I've rounded up six of my favorite current recommendations.

Bargain hunters should consider the Sony Cyber-shot HX5V while still available. It's a 2010 model with Sony Exmor sensor R to enhance photos in low light and faster performance and a high range of Sony G lens injection, but at the same price as less capable of H70 this year. (Although the H70 is a good camera, too.) If you want the latest and greatest, track HX7V, which offers new shooting options, such as a background blur to simulate depth of field.

If you want convenient AA batteries, and manual controls, the Canon PowerShot SX130 IS is the way to go. In fact, if you want the body of this small AA batteries, is the only option.

For those who want to experience easy point-and-shoot (no shooting modes manually or semi-manual), see the Nikon Coolpix S8100 or S9100. They both offer all around the photo quality very good performance and shooting, and they carry a 10x zoom and 18x, respectively, in the compact body.

Canon PowerShot SX230 HS and Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS10 are those leading producers megazoom compact 2011 - those with the most features, the longer lenses, and the highest prices. If you need high quality picture low-light/high-ISO, I would go with Canon. Panasonic is far better of the two, with a performance of fire faster, broader, more objective and more features.

But if you are looking for aircraft with the most features and excellent quality video and photo, see HX9V Sony. It is now my first choice for a mega zoom compact, but it may be the camera that some people want or need.

There are many cameras in this category, although certainly not everything that is available. Look for future revisions of the models of Fujifilm, Casio, Olympus, among others.
