Samsung Chromebook: The Thought Experiment Google Google $ 499 Oh! You're So Wide!

The most impressive thing about Google is that they come Chromebooks opening a file manager. It's not a lot of file management, but it is relatively easy to find, and gives you access to the files fast enough that you download, or screen shots you have taken or documents of a flash drive is connected to the USB port.

It may seem like the most basic tools. But in December, when Google released its beta Chromebook, RC-48, there was no file manager. And Mountain View was adamant that such a basic piece of software was beside the point.

Running Google Chrome the operating system OS, Chromebooks trying to move everything you do on the interwebs. Chrome OS is basically a modified Linux kernel that runs a single native application: the browser Google Chrome. You can install plug-ins and extensions, but otherwise all the applications you use must be a web application. Instead of running a local copy of Microsoft Office, you use Gmail, Google Docs and Google Calendar. Instead of iTunes, you can use Pandora or perhaps the services of "cloud" of music offered by Google and Amazon.

This also means that most of the information is located within a web service like Google Docs. Google pitches Chromebook a computer as a kind of disposable. If it disappears, the company says, will lose none of your data and applications. You only need to buy a replacement machine, login to your existing Google Account, and find all waiting for you, just as you left it.

The problem is that the world is not ready for a machine that does not give access to local files. Google supports both by adding a file manager for Chrome the operating system, which made its debut last month with the arrival of the $ 429 Samsung Series 5 and $ 349 Acer AC700 Chromebook Chromebook-1099. CR-48 beta testers called for a file manager, and Google has given them.

But this file manager is primitive at best. Family nested folders, providing access to downloads and screen shots, and external drives, but there are certain types of files that can be launched directly to the Director. If you click on. Doc, for example, operating system, Chrome gives an error message. Do not open the file in Google Docs. OS now offers a media player to play MP3 files and such, but is the most basic of tools. These are the only place that will be weaned away from local files and applications. Google is still very determined to move around the web

Samsung Chromebook We used the last two weeks, and with the exception of File Manager and Media Player, and a few other PIN and gathering, the basic experience is not very different from what we saw with the CR-48.

Using a solid-state flash drive instead of a traditional hard drive, the car starts for about ten seconds. Immediately goes to sleep and just relive when you close and open the display. And the Security Council makes a terrible model for a lot of sense. But if you are a consumer, this is not a portable machine that can replace a primary. And if you're on a business trip, is only part of the workforce.

There are some web applications that can not natively play, including design tools and video editors and high end games. Even web applications mature enough Google Docs I can not agree with what you get from desktop software.

What's more, shuttling files to Web applications is still a painful process, and this has contributed only marginally from the file manager for Google. But the main problem is that Chromebook is completely useless, but if you do not have internet access. Google is also the center of the web applications are not yet online.
