Rumors of a diesel Chevrolet Cruze has been floating around the intertube since the sedan was launched last year, but now we have the official word straight from General Motors: A Cruze diesel has certainly come to the States USA. Unfortunately, we will not see the Cruze oil until sometime in 2013, probably in mid-cycle refresh of the car.
To date, GM has not confirmed details of the power, although previous rumors had suggested that a 2.0-liter engine with 147 horsepower and 235 lb-ft of torque can be the engine of choice. In Australia, although under the bonnet of the Holden Cruze, the 2.0-liter diesel is good for 160 horsepower and 265 lb-ft.
Since GM is using the new diesel model as a way to "increase the range and fuel-efficient Cruze," does not surprise me if a less powerful engine, but more effective was offered. Currently, the Cruze, in turbocharged 1.4-liter Eco inline four-cylinder good for 138 hp, 148 lb-ft and up to 42 miles per gallon on the highway.
What say you, readers? Could a noble Cruze diesel hit above 50 mpg? Give us your best estimates of fuel economy in the comments, and hit the jump for the official press release from GM.
